You know the routine by heart: you’re spending weekends together, grabbing dinner, texting throughout the day, and maybe even meeting each other's friends. To everyone else, it looks like a relationship. To you, it feels like a relationship. But when the topic of "what are we" comes up, he dances around the answer or tells you he’s just "not ready for labels right now."
It’s confusing, it’s frustrating, and frankly, it’s a waste of your precious time. If you’re feeling like you’re stuck in a "situationship" limbo, it’s time to stop looking for clues and start looking at the reality.
The Power of Being Seen
When a man acts like a boyfriend but refuses the title, he is essentially enjoying the benefits of a committed relationship without the accountability. He gets your companionship, your support, and your affection, while you are left wondering where you stand and whether your needs are even being considered.
The hardest truth to accept is this: When a man wants to be with you, he will make sure there is no doubt in your mind. He won't leave you guessing, and he certainly won't let you hang in the middle of a "maybe."
The "Label" Talk
If you’ve been in this cycle for a while, you don't need another hint or another night of "testing the waters." You need clarity. It is time to have a direct, calm, and empowered conversation.
Stop Asking for Permission: Don't ask, "What do you think we are?" Instead, state your own needs. Try something like: "I’ve really enjoyed the time we’ve spent together, but I’m at a place in my life where I’m looking for a committed, exclusive relationship. That’s what I’m moving toward, and I need to know if that’s where you’re headed, too."
Listen to His Action (or Inaction): If he responds with "I'm just not sure," or "Why do we need a label?", that is your answer. He is telling you that his comfort is more important than your peace of mind. Believe him.
Hold Your Standard: If he isn't ready to step up, you have to be willing to step away. This doesn't mean you’re being mean or aggressive; it means you are respecting your own time and your own heart. Staying in a situation that doesn't meet your needs only keeps you from finding someone who is actually capable of giving you the commitment you deserve.
You Are Worth Being Chosen
There is a massive difference between being "kept" and being "chosen." Being kept is convenient for him. Being chosen is a partnership.
Don’t shrink your standards just because you’re afraid of losing him. If he’s the right one, he’ll step up. If he’s not, then walking away isn't a failure—it’s an act of self-love that clears the space for the man who will be proud to call you his girlfriend. You are an incredible woman; don't let yourself be treated like a "hidden" secret.
Have you ever been in this "limbo" phase, and how did you eventually find the clarity you needed? How do you maintain your boundaries when your heart is involved?
